The initial steps in the Minot 55th Street Northeast Bypass project are in the books as construction crews prepare for early milestones. Gladen Construction, from Laporte, MN, and Ames Construction, out of Burnsville, MN, are prime contractors on the project and have been working at the site for more than a month.

Ackerman-Estvold Engineering is the project engineer for the $17.1 million endeavor that will change the landscape of northeast Minot.

"We are proud of the chance to be taking the lead on a project with such a huge impact on the city and region," said Jeff McElwain, project engineer with Ackerman-Estvold. "The 55th Street Bridge and the Northeast Bypass should provide some much needed relief to traffic concerns on that side of town, as well as allow for additional growth to take place should the city need to expand in that direction."

Ames Construction is preparing to place the first of 10 piers to support the bridge. They expect to start this work within the next 10 days.

Utility companies continue to work in the area, preparing for the bridge and larger road. Due to this work, there will be intermittent closures. Traffic is encouraged to take appropriate detours as signage on the project directs.

The Northeast Bypass will be made as a result of upgrades to County Road 10A, 46th Avenue NE, and 55th Street NE. Gladen Construction is in charge of this portion of the project.

The 55th Street Northeast Grade Separation over Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad will provide a bridge structure to carry traffic over the BNSF mainline track, two existing yard tracks and three additional proposed yard tracks to be constructed north of the existing tracks. Ames Construction is the crew responsible for this section.

The City of Minot, Ward County and the North Dakota Department of Transportation are all partners in the 55th Street Northeast Bypass project. In conjunction with this project, the NDDOT is currently reconstructing the intersection of U.S. Highway 2 and 55th Street. This portion should be complete by the end of October and Highway 2 will return to all lanes of traffic back to normal speeds.

As a reminder, the driving public is encouraged to exercise extra caution throughout the construction zone to ensure their safety and the safety of the crews.

Weekly public information meetings will be held for the 55th Street project at Winfield Solutions, 525 55th St SE, each Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. The public is encouraged to visit, email or to contact the public information coordinator Brekka Kramer at 701.720.5798 for more information.
