RECREATION & WELLNESS

currently under construction

Malcolm Wolf Community Park is a new development in New Town, North Dakota, situated within the Drags Wolf Village of the Four Bears Segment. The park is designed to revitalize the area by offering a variety of recreational amenities to the whole community. The envisioned goal of this project was tied to having a central point for indoor and outdoor recreation with two main components: an indoor gathering space with a 7,500 square foot building and an outdoor activities space.

Thinking of some traditional outdoor activities, as well as developing spaces to have dual purpose functioning and bringing unique amenities that are not in other spaces in the Four Bear Segment. The outdoor area would include spaces for sand volleyball, horseshoe pits, an extensive playground structure, corn hole yard, picnic shelter, and a concept to combine basketball courts that are floodable in the winter for an ice-skating rink.

The indoor community building will have a small and large gathering space for housing parties, and can double as a warming house for the skating rink in the winter. The indoor area will also boast a 1,200 square foot colorful indoor splash pad with an adjacent sauna for year-round enjoyment by the community.

This project was designed with close collaboration with our partners of the Four Bears Segment of the Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara Nation as the intention for them was a deep commitment to enhancing the lives of their members, beautifying their segment, and honoring the memory of Malcolm Wolf.

The Connie Wold Wellness Center is a 20,000 square foot comprehensive fitness and rehabilitation facility in Watford City, North Dakota, dedicated to promoting health and well-being within the community. Watford City was experiencing extensive growth with an influx of residents, creating a need for a community facility that could provide a variety of recreational opportunities.

The facility was designed with two levels and wanted to provide a place to help people on the right track for their best health, whether it is physical, mental or emotional. The lobby combines a check-in desk with a coffee and juice bar. Connie’s Cup is a coffee shop located in the lobby offering a convenient spot for members and visitors to relax and socialize. Amy’s Toy Room offers a kid-friendly play space next to the lobby and main training area. The main training area offers a wide range of exercise equipment, including power racks, free weights, and cardio machines, along with a large room for a variety of fitness classes, and locker room facilities. The upper-level walking track is open and overlooks the main training area below and then curves around an upper training area.

To serve a larger part of the community the Connie Wold Wellness Center also houses McKenzie Health's Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy departments, providing comprehensive rehabilitation services. This space also includes offices, therapy booths, massage therapy room and two Swimex hydrotherapy pools. Thinking of the variety of people using this space, an elevator was also placed in the wellness facility so all members of the community could access the space. The building itself is a precast concrete building with a steel truss system roof. The precast panels are made of colored concrete with brick veneer accents. The design intention was to serve individuals of all fitness levels, from those seeking physical rehabilitation to advanced fitness enthusiasts.

The Magic City Discovery Center (MCDC) is a premier STEAM-focused hybrid children's museum and science center located in Minot, North Dakota. Its mission is to bring children and families together in an interactive environment that inspires creativity, encourages play, and enhances education.

The building boasts 3 stories and 12,000 square feet of exhibit space. The center features over 150 hands-on exhibits spread across 12 distinct galleries, each designed to engage children in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) learning. Collaborating with the MCDC Board to understand the mission of the space helped our team push the envelope to develop a bold & bright space. All of the colors and patterns in the space had a graphic brightness to stand out to our younger users but appeal to all ages. Our unique design needed to match the exhibits’ energy, intent on drawing patrons into the process of learning while having fun. A main feature of the building is the glass tower where a two-story play climbing structure centered, which houses a full-sized plane. The intent was to use the building as a teaching tool, with exposed structures and mechanical & electrical systems to showcase how a building functions.

In addition to its indoor exhibits, MCDC offers a welcoming outdoor space providing panoramic views of North Dakota's landscape. This area can be rented out for a variety of events; weddings, anniversaries, and other parties showcasing the views of the City of Minot.

Thinking it how the space can function for the greater community, the center also includes two multipurpose rooms, office space, and other support spaces. The Magic City Discovery Center hosts monthly activities, educational camps, and classes aimed at enriching children's learning experiences. The center also accommodates birthday parties and field trips, making it a versatile destination for various events.

This is a premier destination where people of all ages will have fun while learning skills that prepare them for future careers.
